This paper addresses the use of dispositions in the Infectious Disease Ontology (IDO). IDO is an ontology constructed according to the principles of the Open Biomedical Ontology (OBO) Foundry and uses the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) as an upper ontology. After providing a brief introduction to disposition types in BFO and IDO, we discuss three general techniques for representing combinations of dispositions under the headings blocking dispositions, complementary dispositions, and collective dispositions. Motivating examples for each combination of dispositions is given (...) along with a specific use case in IDO. The various roles proposed for emotion, whether psychological such as preparing for action or serving prior concerns, or biological such as protecting and promoting well-being, are easily shown to have an awkward number of exceptions. This paper attempts to explain why. To this end it undertakes a Husserlian phenomenological examination of first-person experience of two types of responses, the various somatic responses elicited by sensations (pain, cold, pleasure, sudden intensity) and the various personal directed emotions (grief, fear, affection, joy). The (...) analysis brings out the overall close structural symmetry between the two types of response and the strong hedonic, dynamic, and topological similarity between particular members from each of the two groups. The findings strongly suggest that emotions evolved from the more rudimentary involuntary somatic responses. The hypothesis finds further support in the fact that it explains both the biological unsoundness and anomalous archaic features that emotions often display. It also explains why emotions have no tidy function. (shrink)

An edition of two manuscript essays found in the family archives of the descendants of the painter and writer Eugène Fromentin. These unpublished essays were submitted in 1840 by their author, Albert Aubert, to Fromentin and his friend Paul Bataillard, for comment and in part response to a question which they had posed, concerning the importance of ambition as a prerequisite for happiness. Les deux essais, publiés ici pour la première fois, datent de mars 1840. Leur auteur, Albert (...) Aubert, y répond, au moins partiellement, à une question que ses amis, Eugène Fromentin et Paul Bataillard, lui avaient posée : pour être heureux, l'homme doit-il avoir de l'ambition? Aubert passe en revue l'évolution de l'humanité, du spiritualisme métaphysique au spiritualisme laïc, et nous donne un témoignage sur l'histoire des mentalités sous la monarchie de Juillet : à l'individualisme et au libéralisme de 1789 a succédé la réhabilitation de l'intervention de l'État, afin de développer la solidarité au sein de la société. Ce débat évoque des questions qui sont d'une brûlante actualité, à une époque où nous éprouvons les limites du modèle démocratique, la crise de l'État-providence, l'essoufflement du modèle social-démocrate et la baisse d'efficacité des thérapeutiques keynésiennes. On peut y voir aussi les prémices de Dominique, le roman de 1862 quasi autobiographique de Fromentin, où la retraite souhaitée par le héros éponyme, qui se donne pour un premier venu, comporte néanmoins une vie intérieure active et intense. This essay asks if there is a role for an active public in ratcheting down the harsh politics of crime control in the United States and the United Kingdom that has led to increased use of the criminal law and greater severity in punishment. It considers two opposing answers offered by political and legal theorists and then begins to develop a participatory democratic framework for institutional reform.

In den sozialwissenschaftlichen und sozialtheoretischen Diskussionen ruckt nach einer langeren Interimszeit wieder zunehmend die Frage nach den Konstitutionsbedingungen des Sozialen, von Sozialitat bzw. sozialen Gebilden in den Vordergrund.

Bei einer groben Betrachtungsweise wird meist nur zwischen dem frühen und dem späten Wittgenstein unterschieden, dem Verfasser des Tractatus logico-philosophicus von 1918 und dem Verfasser der 1953 posthum veröffentlichten Philosophischen Untersuchungen. Die Fülle der nachgelassenen Schriften erlaubt es uns jedoch, ein klares Bild der Entwicklung seines Denkens zu zeichnen. Im Zentrum des Aufsatzes steht die Diskussion des Farbenausschlusses, wobei dieser besagt, daß zwei Farben nicht zur selben Zeit am selben Ort gegeben sein können. Zunächst wird geklärt, wie sich die Sprachphilosophie (...) Wittgensteins durch die Thesen zum Farbenausschluß in dem Aufsatz „Some Remarks on Logical Form" im Vergleich zu seiner Position im TLP geändert hat. Die Thesen in SR bilden eine Übergangsposition vom TLP hin zu einer Kalkültheorie der Bedeutung, die sich 1931/32 ausbildete. Alle diese Positionen bewegen sich noch im Rahmen einer allgemein verstandenen Bildtheorie, die durch die Veränderungen stetig unterhöhlt und erst 1932/33 von einer Gebrauchstheorie der Bedeutung abgelöst wird. Das Modell von der Entwicklung der Sprachphilosophie Wittgensteins kann als Bild der insgesamt umfassenden, aber stufenweise erfolgenden Änderung der Theorie der sprachlichen Bedeutung charakterisiert werden.
